Sacred Rocks of Mount Rokko Shrines

六甲山上の神社磐座めぐり

We explored sacred areas near the summit of Mount Rokko.

First, we visited Mount Rokko Shrine. This small worship house was built to honor the goddess of Shugendō, the path of ascetic mountain worship. Originally, it enshrined the goddess of water, and villagers from the foothills would climb up here to perform rain rituals. As with some older shrines, the managing entity has occasionally changed over time, leading to slight changes in the characteristics of the deities worshipped.

There is a pair of sacred rocks, known as Iwakura, which have been objects of worship and places for prayer long before the shrines were established.

Here is the origin of a river flowing into the city.

Now, we will proceed to the next place: the shrine dedicated to the goddess of Mount Rokko, which is home to many large sacred rocks. This shrine has recently gained popularity among those with an interest in spirituality.

It was a cloudy day, so the view from the mountain was just okay.
