The Rokko Mountains

Its natural beauty and ancient traditions

The Rokko Mountains forms part of Setonaikai National Park, with nearly the entire area designated as either a Special Protection Zone or Special Zone.

Despite its proximity to a metropolitan area, this mountain range showcases diverse vegetation and distinctive topography shaped by granite erosion. The forested areas are crisscrossed with rich water systems, creating a protected natural habitat for wildlife.

The rain that falls over the Rokko Mountains and emerges as springs at the base produces pure, mineral-rich water renowned nationwide, supporting traditional industries like sake brewing, which have thrived here for centuries.

The foothills of the Rokko Mountains, facing the Seto Inland Sea, have been home to many people from prehistoric times to the present day. The residents have long relied on the mountains for food and resources, making them an essential part of their lives and a place of spiritual significance.

Opposite the Rokko Mountains lies Awaji Island, which plays a central role in Japan’s creation myths. With the end of the Ice Age, Japan separated from the Eurasian continent, giving rise to the Japanese archipelago and forming the Seto Inland Sea and Awaji Island as seawater filled the lowlands. These myths may echo ancient memories of such primordial events, long before Japan’s historical period began, centered around Nara.

The Rokko Mountains are a place where people’s lives and beliefs have intertwined across millennia, preserving traces of ancient, forgotten cultures within Japan’s deep history.
